Dornoch Cathedral Golfing Dornoch

Around the Dornoch area

Often likened to a string of pearls, the towns and villages along the East coast of the northern Highlands each present their own individual personalities and beauty. Not least in this respect is the Royal Burgh of Dornoch. Sitting peacefully and comfortably on the north shore of the Dornoch Firth, the town offers a host of attractive features. Many historic buildings can be seen in the town square, softened by broad-leaf trees lining the streets and lanes providing shaded areas to relax and enjoy the environment.

Only a few minutes walk from the town centre lie miles of golden sand fringing the Dornoch coastline. If this were in Spain you'd be lucky to find a space to lay your towel down, but here you'll find no more than a scattering of folk walking, playing or lounging - it's yours for the taking.

Sandwiched between this historic Burgh and the glorious seashore, stretching for a full two miles, lies Royal Dornoch Golf Course, a facility of splendour welcoming visiting golfers from around the globe. Many famous American professional golfers, among them Tom Watson and Ben Crenshaw enthuse over the famous links and are honorary members of the club. The immediate area boasts no less than 12 quality golf courses, all within an easy drive of Dornoch.

Skibo Castle, just along the road from Dornoch has it's own private golf course. Formerly the home of the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, this palatial country club now offers a haven of peace and tranquility to the famous, such as Bill Clinton former President of USA, television personalities Ant & Dec, Robbie Williams, Sting and many more household names. It was here in 2000 that Madonna stayed when marrying Guy Ritchie in Dornoch Cathedral.

The area enjoys a temperate year round climate. Facilities include world ranked Championship Golf Course, excellent fishing opportunities, blue flagged beaches, 13th century Cathedral, Health Centre, fine restaurants and shops, excellent primary and secondary schools.

Tain, just a short trip away, lies on the south shore and eyes its northerly neighbour across the firth. The town holds the distinction of being the oldest Royal Burgh in Scotland, having received its charter in the year 1066.

Like Dornoch, many of the town centre buildings are centuries old such as St. Duthus Chapel, The Tolbooth and Court House. Here you will find Tain Golf Club, a full 18 hole championship course.
